What is a uterine infection?

Uterine Infections
Uterine infections, also known as endometritis, are caused by bacteria that has entered the uterus from either the vagina or from the blood stream. In some cases the infection can also occur when the embryo implants itself into the uterus wall. This type of infection is quite common, though it’s not always serious.
Causes
The most common cause of a uterine infection is a bacterial infection caused by bacteria like gonorrhea, chlamydia, bacterial vaginosis (BV), group B streptococcus or E. coli. These bacteria are usually acquired through sexual contact and they can enter the uterus via the vagina when it is not properly cared for.
An untreated urinary tract infection (UTI) can also lead to uterine infections. The UTI can cause bacteria to travel up the urethra and enter the uterus, leading to an infection.
Symptoms and Treatment
The most common symptoms of a uterine infection include:
- High fever, chills, nausea, and vomiting
- Pain and tenderness in the lower abdomen
- Unusual vaginal discharge that may be either yellow-green or yellow-brown
- Pelvic pain that begins during menstruation or intercourse
Most cases of uterine infections can be treated with antibiotics and in some cases, if the infection is severe, a hysterectomy may be necessary. It is important that women, who have recently had surgery in the abdominal area, get treated for a UTI as quickly as possible to prevent the possibility of a uterine infection.
Prevention
The best way to prevent a uterine infection is to practice safe sex and to monitor the hygiene of the vaginal area. Make sure that all sexual partners are checked and treated for any infections before engaging in sexual activity.
It is also important to keep the urinary tract healthy by drinking plenty of water, taking probiotics and cranberry juice, avoiding douching and excessive use of feminine hygiene products, and cleaning the genital area properly after intercourse.
If you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above or if you suspect that you have an infection, it is important to seek medical attention immediately. Uterine infections can be serious if left untreated, so it is important to take all necessary precautions in order to avoid any complications.
