The Dos and Don’ts of Caring for a Newborn

The Dos and Don’ts of Caring for a Newborn
Newborns are helpless and fragile, and improperly caring for them can lead to unfortunate consequences. Therefore, parents should follow these tips to make sure their baby receives the best care from day one.
Do’s
- Keep the baby warm: Newborns are sensitive to temperature changes and lose heat quickly, so they should always be clothed or covered with a receiving blanket.
- Clean the diaper area: The diaper area should be cleaned after each diaper change. Use warm water and a mild, unscented soap or baby wipes.
- Feed on demand: Newborns need to eat often, usually every 2-3 hours. Breast feeding is recommended, but formula feeding is also acceptable.
- Follow a bedtime routine: Establishing a bedtime routine is important for babies’ physical and emotional health. Make sure the sleeping environment is comfortable and calming.
- Keep skin moisturized: Newborn skin is very delicate, so keep it properly hydrated by applying a gentle lotion after each bath.
Don’ts
- Don’t overfeed: Overfeeding can cause vomiting, indigestion and lower weight gain. Be sure to stay on a regular feeding schedule.
- Don’t ignore signs of illness: Look out for signs of illness such as fever, diarrhea or a rash and make sure to seek medical attention if necessary.
- Don’t underestimate sleep: Newborns need a lot of sleep, so make sure your baby gets plenty of rest.
- Don’t use harsh cleaning products: When cleaning feeding utensils, toys, or other household items, be sure to use gentle and odor-free products.
- Don’t overstimulate: Newborns are easily overwhelmed, so avoid loud noises or sudden movements when interacting with your baby.
By following the above tips, parents can be sure they’re providing the best care possible for their newborn and ensure they’re healthy and happy.
