“Raising a Confident and Independent Learner”

Raising a Confident and Independent Learner
Every parent wants their child to be confident and an independent learner. Creating an enabling environment to foster your children’s freedom and sense of responsibility can facilitate their development in terms of self-confidence, problem-solving skills, and willingness to tackle challenges. Here are some ways to help raise a confident and independent learner.
1. Assist in Developing a Sense of Autonomy
Encourage your child to make their own decisions and to be responsible for the consequences of them. Gradually, as your child grows in trust and confidence, give them age-appropriate responsibilities and tasks, and empower them to take actions and accept responsibility for the outcomes.
2. Provide Opportunities to Learn and Explore
Give your child the freedom to explore their surroundings and to figure out things independently. Learning through exploration effort is far more effective than spoon-feeding information. Encourage your child to ask questions and to experiment without having to be afraid of failure or making mistakes.
3. Foster Innovation and Creativity
Provide your child with the environment and resources necessary for creative thinking and problem solving. Help them to think differently and challenge them to come up with their own solutions.
4. Acknowledge and Appreciate Progress
Noticing and complimenting your child on their achievements and progress, both big and small, communicates to them that you value their efforts, and gives them the assurance to take on further challenges.
5. Be a Source of Encouragement
Children learn best when they feel comfortable and confident about themselves. Provide words of encouragement and praise and make them feel capable and motivated. Demonstrate enthusiasm and excitement towards their creativity, new skills, and accomplishments.
6. Make it a Part of Your Daily Life
Create a culture of problem-solvingin your home. Invite your child to participate and contribute to family decision-making, and discuss things in a respectful and constructive manner.
Above all, instill in your child confidence, positive self-esteem and self-belief. Model and demonstrate a strong will and enthusiasm in the face of obstacles and challenges, and foster a sense of resilience and tenacity. With the right guidance, your child can become an independent learner and confident individual.
